St. Ann's Church ©2011 - All rights reserved
Our Parish is named after St. Ann, the Mother of Mary, the Mother of our
Savior, Jesus Christ. We celebrate the life and love of St. Ann and her
husband, St. Joachim, on July 26. Here is what we know about St. Ann and
St. Joachim.

Early tradition in the Church and one of the so called apocryphal gospels
(the one according to James) provides the names of the parents of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. Apocryphal writings – not part of the canon of the Bible
– can provide much information to fill in the details about people and events
that we do not find in the canonical gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and
John). These apocryphal writings do not have the standing as God’s
inspired word as do the gospels, but they are indispensable for
understanding the piety and religious practices of the early Christian
community. From these writings we know that St. Ann and St. Joachim both
were of the Tribe of Judah of the Royal House of David. Mary was probably
their only child.

St. Ann has been honored from early Christian
times. Churches were dedicated to her honor, and
the Fathers, especially of the Eastern Churches,
loved to speak of her sanctity and privileges. She is
often represented as teaching her little daughter to
read the scriptures. (Our statue near the pulpit
displays such a scene.) St. Joachim has been
honored from time immemorial in the Churches of
the East, and since the 6th century public devotion
to him has been observed in all countries. However,
as in the case of St. Ann, the gospel tells us
nothing about his life. Tradition, grounded on very
old testimonies, informs us that Saints Joachim and
Ann in their old age came from Galilee to settle in
Jerusalem, and there the Blessed Mother of God was born; there also they
died and were buried. A Church was built during the 4th century, possibly by
St. Helena, on the site of the home of Saints Joachim and Ann in Jerusalem.

Anne (or Ann) is the patron saint of Christian mothers and of women in labor.

Prayer:
Parents of Mary, pray for all parents that they may provide the loving home
and faithful teaching that you provided your daughter. Amen
